Even about 15 years ago having a car in our country was a sign of being rich and prosperous. Not every family could afford to have a car. Nowadays the situation has changed. Practically all families have a car, and financially-secured families have 2 and sometimes 3 cars. Certainly, a new comfortable car even nowadays costs very expensive and it’s not for everyone. But anyone in the country can afford an old, not a very good automobile. Besides, it is very easy to take one on credit. Even several years ago credit on cars was impossible for our Russian people. As for us, we also have a car, a new one, but not that expensive, of a Russian producer - Lada. Like many others, I dreamed to go to work by it. I thought it would be very comfortable. But it appeared to be not that convenient, sometimes it’s easier to use public transport. First, the car is parked rather far from our block, because we don’t want to leave it without control in the street, as cars are still often stolen. And the nearest paid secured parking place - in 15 minutes of walking from our house. Second, in winter here it is very cold: up to 20-30°C. And the car, which was standing all the night long outside in freezing weather, is sometimes hard to start in the morning because of frost. Besides, it snows very often here in winter, and in the morning before going you need some time to remove the snow from the roof and take away the snow-drifts near your car, otherwise it will be impossible to leave the parking place. Unfortunately, underground parking places is a new thing for our country. There are such parking places only in Moscow, in new, expensive, elite houses. In a town situated near Moscow where I live, there are not such parking places at all! Third, and this is the most important, short of Moscow in the morning and in the evening there are formed huge traffic jams and it’s practically impossible to move. It will take you hours to reach the place of destination. Even in the afternoon it is hard to move about Moscow too. So the fastest and the most reliable kind of transport now is suburban trains and underground. Certainly, in rush hours trains are overcrowded, and there is no place even for standing, let alone sitting, but anyway, you move, instead of staying in traffic jams. So, we usually use our car only in summer, when going to the country to have a rest.
