This is usually done on whitewater or different degrees of rough water, in order to thrill and excite the raft passengers. The development of this activity has become popular since the mid 1970s.

Risks in whitewater rafting stem from both environmental dangers and from improper behavior. Certain features on rivers are inherently unsafe and have remained consistently so despite the passage of time. These would include "keeper hydraulics", "strainers" (e.g. fallen trees), dams (especially low-head dams, which tend to produce river-wide keeper hydraulics), undercut rocks, and of course dangerously high waterfalls.

Like most outdoor sports, rafting in general has become safer over the years. Expertise in the sport has increased, and equipment has become more specialized and increased in quality.

Ski touring has parallels with hiking, backpacking, and mountaineering.

As a hobby, cross-country skiing may be viewed as a kind of "bushwalking on skis", where skiers tackle trails of various lengths and difficulties. Some skiers stay out for extended periods using tents and equipment similar to bushwalkers/hikers, whereas others take relatively short trips from ski resorts on maintained trails.

As a sport, cross-country skiing is one of the most difficult endurance sports, as its motions use every major muscle group and it (along with rowing and swimming) is one of the sports that burn the most calories per hour in execution.

In their early childhood kids begin to attend different sports clubs. Boys are fond of marshal arts, kick-boxing, tennis, ice hockey. Girls take up dancing, gymnastics, figure skating. Marshal arts are also very popular with girls now. There are traditional russian kinds of sports clubs as well, such as cross-country skiing, football, athletics. And they are free of charge. But they are not that popular with russian kids now.

Adults usually go to fitness centers, men take up body-building, power-lifting. Girs in their 20s and women prefer aerobics and aqua-aerobics as well.

And all the youth and adults like riding a bike, especially in good weather. Teenagers also go for extreme riding on their mountain bikes. But that is something which is certainly not for everybody.
